attribute | DENSWB01 | comment | String | Water density data in Kg/m3 were obtained following a sequence of conversions: first, the water weight measurements (ounces, dragme, grains including the weight of the instrument in air) were converted into grains, as indicated in the Preface by Marsili: 1 pound corresponds to 12 ounces, 1 ounce to 8 dragme and 1 dragma to 60 grains. Marsili highlights on Plate IX, page 26, that 6 dragme is equivalent to 360 grains. Then distilled surface water, used by Marsili as reference water and whose weights are given on Table 4 on Plate VIII, page 23 of Histoire Physique de la mer, was converted into gains. Finally, the density was obtained by applying the formula: ρ=1000*P/Pr, where ρ is the density of water in Kg/m3; 1000 is the density of distilled water in Kg/m3; P is the weight of seawater in grains measured by Marsili; Pr is the weight of reference water (distilled water) in grains measured by Marsili. The associated minimum error was ±1,23 Kg/m3. |
